Her father was a scientist that worked at NASA, and she got a lot of her ideas regarding perfection and the attainment of the highest class of work ethic possible from him. The basic premise of her philosophy as she got it from her father was that no matter how small her task was, she needed to do it in a manner that made it seem world class.
You might think that this is easy to say for someone with a job as important as that of a venture capitalist, but the fact of the matter is that Miura-Ko did not start off at the top. Indeed, she started off as a lowly administrative assistant working for the Dean of Engineering at Yale. Her job involved rather mundane tasks such as making copies of certain documents and filing them according to her instructions. You might think that there are not that many ways to excel when the job that you have is this mundane, and initially Miura-Ko though the same as well. However, her father taught her otherwise.
Miura-Ko’s father suggested that she think of ways in which she could do her job in the best way possible, and pretty soon they started to have some pretty amazing ideas. For example, Miura-Ko began to ensure that the copies she was making were the best that they could be, until a point came where people struggled to find a difference between the original document and the copy that Miura-Ko had made.
Another of Miura-Ko’s jobs was that she had to label documents before filing them. She began to print the labels so that they looked more professional instead of just winging it the way so many assistants had done before. Even when she was sent out to do something as simple as getting donuts, Miura-Ko ensured that she did the best job possible by going to the shop where they had the very best donuts available and ensuring that the people she was working with and for only ended up getting the freshest donuts available.
The overall end goal of doing all of this was to create moments of delight for the people she was working with and for. These moments of delight stay in people’s heads and make them think of your more often, thus resulting in a higher likelihood of you getting much better jobs than would have been the case otherwise. This happened with Miura-Ko as well. After excelling at the simple tasks that she had been given for quite some time, the dean gave her a new responsibility. When the Dean’s friend, Lewis, was visiting the campus, he gave Miura-Ko the responsibility of giving him a tour of the school. True to her father’s advice, Miura-Ko gave him the best tour that anyone could have received full of in depth information and endlessly informative while also being quite entertaining at the same time. As a result of the quality of the tour that she had just given, Miura-Ko ended up establishing a fairly good impression of herself in the mind of the person that she was giving the tour to.
As a result of this, the man ended up inviting her to California so that she could have a tour of his company. As it turns out, the Lewis that she was giving a tour to was none other than Lewis Platt, the CEO of a Hewlett Packard or HP as it is now commonly known.
Miura-Ko, knowing a good opportunity when she sees one, immediately accepted the offer. Upon her return to campus, she received two pictures from Lewis. The first of these pictures was of Miura-Ko sitting on a bench next to him, and the second of these pictures was that of Bill Gates sitting in that exact same spot. This gave Miura-Ko the inspiration to dream big and see herself as someone who could be anything and anyone that she wanted, something that had a pretty profound impact on the rest of her career overall.
Ann Miura-Ko went on to become a key figure in the world of startups, and one of the most powerful women currently active in the world of tech. She has created opportunities for many people and has showed countless women that they can also dream big and create a life for themselves that is far greater than anything they could have possibly imagined before.
